Happy Feet - The Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology. It’s one of those treatments that has been around for years (5,000 in fact) but is still a bit of an unknown. Ask most people and they’ll tell you it’s something to do with the feet but they’re not sure quite what.

Basically, reflexology is based on the concept that specific areas of the foot correspond to specific areas of the body: your little toe connects to your ear and your heel to your buttocks! Sound all a bit far-fetched? The classic example of how reflexes are intertwined is the knee jerk reflex - tap your knee and your thigh muscles will spasm which makes your knee jerk. Reflexology is based on the same principle.

Reflexology is fast becoming one of the most popular complementary therapies available at Cedar Falls Health Farm in Taunton. Our highly-qualified and experienced Reflexologists at the health farm put this down to the treatment being “simple, safe and very effective”.

Heal Your Soul

Until recently there has been little research into the benefits of complementary medicine, and, in one way clinical research seems inappropriate for such therapies, which aim to improve your total well-being, rather than specifically cure illness. However, there have been a number of controlled research project over the past few years which have concluded that, among other benefits, reflexology can:

Significantly reduce pre-menstrual symptoms. The crankiness we feel when we are suffering from PMS is usually because our hormones are raging, our glands are going crazy and therefore, our highs and lows are intensified. By stimulating the glands through reflexology, we can make these highs and lows less drastic. For example, 35 women at the University of California who received weekly 30-minute sessions of reflexology for a period of 8 weeks reduced their symptoms by and astounding 62%.

Considerably improve sleep quality during the postnatal period.
Sleep is hard enough to come by for new mothers but women who received a 30-minute session of reflexology for 5 consecutive days consistently reported improved sleep quality.

Who Needs Reflexology?

You don’t have to be ill to get benefit from reflexology, many people use it as a preventative treatment to banish bugs and keep their health in tip top condition.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Everybody is unique and will respond differently to reflexology, whilst there is often immediate improvements experienced, you should expect to have 3 – 4 treatments before seeing a more significant improvement.
